Bringing Life Back to Our Harbours: The Power of a Living Sea Wall

Our harbours are more than just places for boats, they are vital marine habitats. But, traditional sea walls are often bare, flat and lifeless structures that do little for biodiversity. That’s why we are working to install Living Sea Walls in harbours across Cornwall.

These innovative structures are designed to mimic natural rock pools, creating small crevices and surfaces where marine life can thrive.

🌱 Here’s how a Living Sea Wall benefits Cornwall’s coastlines:

  • Boosts Marine Biodiversity
Living Sea Walls attract and support a wide range of marine species—from barnacles and limpets to fish and seaweed—helping restore healthy ecosystems in our harbours.

  • Fights Climate Change
These walls can help trap carbon through the growth of marine plants and organisms, playing a small but important role in climate resilience.

  • Improves Water Quality
Filter-feeding organisms like mussels and oysters grow on Living Sea Walls and naturally help clean the surrounding water.

  • Protects Against Erosion
The textured surfaces break up wave energy better than flat concrete, reducing long-term damage to harbour structures.

  • Inspires Environmental Education
They’re also an incredible tool for education—connecting people with the hidden life beneath the water and sparking interest in marine conservation.

By rethinking how we build our harbours and coastlines, we can make them part of the solution, not the problem!

Our Living Sea Wall project is already making waves in Cornwall, and we’re just getting started.
